Introduction
Floor pouffes are one of the most versatile pieces of furniture you can add to your home. They work as extra seating, footrests, casual side tables, and even soft play seating for kids. Best of all, they’re surprisingly easy to make yourself — especially when you use crumbed foam.
In this guide, we’ll show you how to build your own custom floor pouffe using crumbed foam, with simple tools and materials you can source locally. It’s affordable, eco-friendly, and completely custom to your space.
Why Use Crumbed Foam for a Floor Pouffe?
Crumbed foam is ideal for pouffes because:
- Comfortable but supportive – moulds to shape but holds structure
- Long-lasting – doesn’t collapse like cheap polyester filling
- Eco-friendly – made from recycled foam offcuts
- Easy to adjust – add or remove filling until firmness feels perfect
It’s also quieter, heavier, and more premium-feeling than bean bag beads.
What You’ll Need
Materials
- Crumbed foam (approx. 80–150 litres depending on pouffe size)
- Heavy-duty fabric (canvas, upholstery fabric, outdoor fabric or velvet)
- Matching thread
- Long zipper (30–50 cm recommended)
Tools
- Sewing machine (or strong hand stitching needle)
- Fabric scissors or rotary cutter
- Measuring tape
- Pins or fabric clips
- Funnel or large cardboard tube (for filling)
Step 1 – Choose Your Pouffe Size & Shape
Common floor pouffe sizes:
- Small round pouffe: 40–45 cm diameter
- Standard pouffe: 50–60 cm diameter
- Large floor pouffe: 70+ cm diameter
Popular shapes:
- Round
- Square
- Cylinder
- Hexagon
Tip: For living rooms, 50–60 cm is the sweet spot for both seating and footrest use.
Step 2 – Cut Your Fabric Panels
For a round pouffe, you’ll need:
- 2 x circles (top and bottom)
- 1 x long rectangle (side wall panel)
For a square pouffe, you’ll need:
- 2 x squares
- 4 x side panels
Add 2 cm seam allowance on all sides.
Mark where your zipper will sit — usually halfway around one side panel.
Step 3 – Sew the Cover
- Sew the zipper into the side panel first
- Join side panels into one continuous ring
- Attach the top panel
- Attach the bottom panel
- Turn the cover right-side out
Tip: Use a heavy stitch length and double-stitch stress points.
Step 4 – Fill with Crumbed Foam
This is the fun (and slightly messy) part.
- Use a funnel, cardboard tube, or cut bottle to guide foam in
- Fill gradually, stopping to shape and test firmness
- Shake and press the pouffe as you go to distribute evenly
How Firm Should It Be?
- Soft lounge style: 70–80% full
- Seating pouffe: 85–95% full
- Footrest only: slightly softer is fine
Crumbed foam will settle slightly after first use — topping up later is easy.
Step 5 – Close, Shape & Enjoy
Zip closed, roll and pat the pouffe into shape, and you’re done.
Your custom pouffe is now:
- Fully washable (if you chose washable fabric)
- Adjustable for comfort
- Long-lasting and eco-friendly
Perfect for living rooms, kids’ spaces, bedrooms, or outdoor entertaining areas.
How Much Crumbed Foam Do You Need?
Approximate guide:
- 40 cm pouffe: 60–80 litres
- 50 cm pouffe: 90–120 litres
- 60 cm pouffe: 130–160 litres
If in doubt, order slightly more — leftover crumbed foam is perfect for cushions, pet beds, or top-ups.
Final Tips for Best Results
- Choose heavy upholstery fabric for durability
- Add an inner liner for easier washing
- Mix crumbed foam sizes for extra comfort
- Use outdoor fabric for patio or poolside pouffes
